Coil pack for a 550

I have an 82 XJ Maxim 550 that I got as a gift for my birthday. It needs a new coil pack. Trying to figure out which one it is that is going out and a friend offered to give me a xs650 coil. I honestly am figuring this out as I go. So my question is, would that coil pack work or no?

 

this shouldn't really be in the faq section but anyway. The xs uses a different part number coil and only the newer ones have a dual outlet coil like you would need for your bike, and even if the xs coil was useable you would want to get 2 so you had matching coils. It is relatively easy to test the coils with a multimeter, im sure there is probably a write up on it here somewhere and there is one in the manual which you should definately get. Often when pepole think their coil is bad on these bike the plug wires just need to be timed back a little (unscrem the plug cap cut off a 1/4-3/8 piece of the wire and reattach the cap) or the resistor in a cap is loose and needs to be tightened. new coils can be gotten from xj4ever (click the engine at the top right of every page, or you can prick up a used one (make sure it has been tested in spec) from any of the xj550, xj650, xj750, or yx600 and maybe a few others.
