I am surprised more people aren't doing this its really not that hard to make a negative mold to make new emblems with especially as they aren't overly complicated on the xjs.

I repaired my seca gas tank emblems ( they were missing the upper and lower parts of the YAMAHA letters ) using 5 minute epoxy and round handle needle files - it was a fun inside workbench project last winter. The finished product actually strengthens the entire emblem helping to prevent it happening again while buffing the tank after waxing. If anyone would like more detail on how to do it just let me know.

    They look great.

What product would I use to replace the gold coating on the gas tank emblems that has completely worn off?

    Info appreciated.

    New badges?

Truly the cheapest solution in the long run; especially tank badges.

"Seca550" badges are a tad more difficult to find without paying $45 a pop. (But not impossible.)

That being said, those are some nice looking replicas. Easily done with an original badge, by a hobbyist familiar with resin casting-- I suspect a fellow modeler.

Not a modeler, although i have a mate that keeps bringing me his parts for rebuilding when he crashes his planes. Its his flying skills that don't seem to work rather than my rebuilding that fails....and often down to electronics failing mid flight.

The Gold is a foil, gold leaf is too flakey... excuse the pun..I can produce a pair a day with not a lot of effort.

What kind of foil? How do you apply it? How durable is it?

Gold Foil, glue, heat and a clear coat. I would say it is durable..

so put the glue on the badge, lay a piece of gold foil, and then somehow cut the excess?

then just clear over the whole badge? just spray krylon/etc?
