After being dead for at least 5 years (at least that's what the PO told me), my XJ750 has a heart beat.

After umpteen hours working on the carbs , getting the valve clearances correct, a new solenoid I finally hooked up the auxiliary fuel tank and with just a couple shots of starting fluid she started right up and ran pretty decent. Choke is working as it should and the throttle working as it should also. I have a lot of work to do before it's ready for it's first ride but I'm just excited that at least I have a running machine!! I'll be working on setting the idle mixture screws and synching the carbs over the next few days.

Thanks for all the great advice here - I couldn't have gotten to this point without this site.

That is a fantastic feeling isn't it? Hearing and feeling a machine that was at one point, given up for dead or discarded as junk.....

I look back at all the bikes I've either restored or even just "rehabbed" and the feeling is exactly the same each time one begins to "breath" on it's own.....it's a huge rush and a mix of joy, accomplishment and satisfaction. I have a saying that I used while coaching kids for nearly 60 different teams.....if you want your kids to develop seft esteem, don't hand them a trophy for every sport they play just for showing up...let them accomlish something and learn the value of working for something. THAT will boost their self esteem more than anything that you can ever hand to them.

And yes, bringing back a POS to running condition is a huge boost!

    Congratulations!

thanks to everyone for the congratulations - it is a great feeling. I agree totally with you Jeff - easy rewards for mediocre achievements doesn't give near the self esteem of actually accomplishing something - My kids were even excited to hear the bike run - they know how many hours I've put into it so far.
