Looks like ethanol fuel and moisture from sitting around. One reason to drain the carbs and tank when storing these bikes to prevent this from happening.

Carb soak is going the get a lot of that out but you are going to see some corrosion damage (pitting) in the float bowls. The drain screws are going to be hard to get loose too. Len at xj4ever may have some spares if you need to replace.

Careful on the carb soak. If you leave them in there too long the aluminum will turn black.
Those look like standard Hitachi carbs

crikey, I'm wondering what mine will look like when I crack them open 8O

a tip... once you've stripped the carbs, find a hydroblaster and get them to clean them up for you. They do an amazing job.

I am convinced that soda blasting carbs is the way to go. The soda just washes out with water. Unlike bead blasting can clogg and you might have to manually remove it.

When you order your parts don't forget the throttle shaft v-seals. Your's will need replacing. Also fuel rail and idle mixture screw o-rings. Skip these and you'll just be pulling the rack off again. :(

I agree with Bushy, that looks like a plugged air jet. Different carbs have replaceable and non replaceable air jets in different places, but that one is not like the others... Also, the jets under that hats are the pilot air and main air jets, but I forget exactly what circuits the air jets in the back connect to.

You can tell their hitachis by the little bullseye symbol on the float bowls. That's the hitachi symbol. Here's a cool explanation on the meaning: http://www.hitachi-automotive.us/html/about/index.html

Take the rack apart. Get new throttle shaft seals and o-rings for the fuel tubes that go between the carbs.
Looks like you put that whole rack in the carb soak. Are the floats OK? That stuff is alittle hard on composite floats.
In any case take lots of pictures and just do one carb at a time.
XJ4ever has kits now that have all the parts and screws you will need, including float bowl drain screws.

RvdH's carbs? Look like the towers are cut?

Maybe the pilot screws are stuck or something.

Yes, it turns out the previous owner (or the one before him) cut into the towers to be able to unscrew the pilot screws. They do seem to be unstuck now.
