my xj wont start.

    hi ppl and a very good day to you all. im darren and im new to the forum. i recentlt finished (if a project is ever really finnished) a xj900 project. bike started and rode fine for a few weeks the one day i got home after a ride out it wouldnt start. when you press the starter nothing happens. iv checked the button and its sending out a good earth. iv changed the starter cut out relay changed the solenoid and the earth cable. it bump starts easy and fires 1st time if i short the solenoid terminals. any ideas would be much appreciated.

    Have you tested the starter solenoid?

    Yeah I tested it it was good but when all else failed I changed it anyway just in case

    Welcome. Put XJ900 in your signature so the members will know what model you have. As far as it not starting...the wiring at the switch may not be making enough of a connection to "fire" your bike. I had the same issue. I took my right control switch apart and found that I had ONE wire of the five or six wires to the contact soldered to the contact plate at the start button. I re-stripped the wiring, cleaned the contact plate, re-soldered the wiring to the contact plate, added a new spring and button. Problem solved. Hope this helps.

    I have looked at the starter switch and I seem to have a good contact how ever I've tried everything else so I'm going to strip out the switch clean resolder and replace springs just invade. Thanks for the info Gary it was much appreciated. Il keep you informed while I'm on I have replaced solenoid. Started relay. Earth cable and some other bits that turned out to be ok after all so any member in the uk that needs any of the spares I took off are welcome to them after all if we can't look after each other it's a sad world. Just drop me a line and il post them off
