clutch replacement

so im getting ready to order a new clutch kit/w springs,do i need to replace the just the friction or friction and steels.? :? i was gonna go with EBC i got a budget of around 150.

 

If your steels are not discolored, warped, or missing the little dots(in other words worn out), you shouldn't need to replace them. I do recommend that you replace the bolts along with your springs. And remember to soak the new friction disks for a half an hour in motor oil. One other thing to check, the pressure plate, look for signs of overheating, gouges, warpage, or cracks, if you have any of these better change the plate.

 

ok thats good info i wont order anything until ive got it all tore down and inspected.any preference on brand? was gonna go with EBC.but thought of barnett. any suggestions?

 

What does XJ4Ever carry?

 

I have no preference about brand, because I've never worn out an XJ clutch. I have taken the clutch apart in my current engine which has 19K on the clock and even though it's still in great shape, I plan on replacing the friction disks, bolts, and springs anyway.

 

please please double check the torque on the hub bolts and use lock tite

that was a marathon " put the bike together" . started in the morning with the cases split and rode it that evening, well 30 miles anyway .
instant lockup at about 45, i tried to start it but it didn't sound good !
but i saved the oil and reused it, so it wasn't a complete loss
at the time i was mad enough to slap a Nun but now it's kind of funny

 

A catastrophic failure is no laughing matter, especially if it was preventable. I hope this experience has helped you to be more patient with your mechanical endevours.

 

On the way home tonight i noticed the clutch not slipping. So when i took off from a stop light i got on it real hard and no slipping in fact i grabbed real hard. The bike had been sitting for over a year before i bought it. Is this a common thing? I changed the oil with castrol motorcycle oil 20w50 the 4T.and its running really good right now.

 

The plates can get "sealed" to each other. Take the cover off,loosen the bolts and see if a tiny screwdriver will fit between the steel and the friction plates.

A 4$ sheet of gasket material will give you a new gasket with lots left over.At least on a 750. From the photo's the other models have a far more complicated gasket,probably not worth it. Just order a new one from XJ4ever.
The oil you won't lose more than pays for the gasket.
