I just received a 1982 Yamaha xj650 as a project and here's what I know. The bike does not start. It turns over but never catches. The owner before me put in new battery, rebuilt the carb, and spark plugs. He said within about 15-20 tries it will catch and idol but when you shut it off again it won't start. I would love some help on where to start and what to replace or rebuild or fix. Post in this thread or PM me. Thank you very much!!!

when you try to start does it actually turn the engine over or does just the starter spin without turning the engine?
We need to narrow this down because it could be electrical/ignition , starter clutch problems or carb issues.

First off check your plugs for spark/replace if necessary, also are they getting fuel? Then check the air filter. You may need to take the carbs apart and give them a thourough cleaning.

    It's a starting point.
