For all of you XJ'ers with drag bars on your bike, can anyone tell me where to find a shorter speedometer cable that will bolt on to a 1980 XJ650?

I have installed a set of drag bars and replaced the tach/speedo cluster with an after-market speedometer (no tach). The original speedometer cable threads onto the new speedometer just fine, but is several inches too long and needs replacing anyways. I am looking for something that is 2-3 inches shorter but still has the metal tab at one end for bolting the cable end to the fork.

    Suggestions?

Already have actually, despite Len's vast inventory of XJ parts, this is not among them.

Re route it. Best suggestion in my opinion. I have had to do it that way before. Works well. Good luck.

Thanks for the input. And yes, MikesChevelle, I made a mental blunder regarding the drag bars - good eye - I had a similar issue with my clutch cable being too long (due to the drag bars) and crossed my thinking while writing the original post. I made a custom bracket for my new speedo, which positions the speedo at a lower position on the triple trees, and as a result I found myself with excess length in the speedo cable. Looks like the best route for everything is to just reroute the cables, so I will do that. Thanks!

    Re-routing a speedo cable isn't always possible.

Find a Yamaha street bike, same "era" ('79~'83) that is "shorter in stature" in the front. Maybe PM member JPaganel and ask him to measure his XS400's speedo cable.

Virtually any Yamaha street bike from the year range I mentioned will have the same fittings at the top and bottom. Find a bike with shorter forks and you've got it. Post the length you need; I'll see how long a Seca 550 cable is.

Thanks fitz, I'm actually just going to use a stock speedo cable for the bike - after repositioning the speedometer, the slack issue has since resolved itself.
