rpms wont go down!

    i have a 1980 maxim 650 on first startup it idles just fine (just cleaned carbs) i drive it for a while then come back and click it into neutral and release the clutch and the rpms just keep going higher and higher...any ideas?

    Have you checked for vacuum leaks at the carb to head boots and throttle shaft seals? Are the carb sync ports caps dry or cracked?

    Did you initially set the idle after the engine was fully warmed up? Try riding the bike a couple of miles and then adjusting the idle with the idle screw.

    Verify your valve clearances;

    precisely wet-set the float levels;

    and do a running vacuum sync.

    You might also check that the throttle cable is moving freely and not binding or routed incorrectly.
