    83 XJ 750 K. Gas tank a mess when I got it. Cleaned up well. Starts fine with choke and idles at spec (1000 rpm). After riding for a few miles the idle increases.

    When hot and at idle I now get 2500 rpm. Will not resume spec idle until shut down and cooled. Anyone have any ideas as to cause?

    Valve adjustmants need to be checked and in spec first.
    Then check carbs;
    Float levels correct?
    Any vacuum leaks? Throttle shaft seals and carb boots are always a problem
    Carbs sync properly?
    Has a compression test been done to ensure the motor is healthy?

    Your symptons point to a possible vacuum leak.

    Set the idle when fully hot, that's why there's choke when it's cold.

    Thanks All!! Setting the idle with engine hot seems to have solved my problem. I still need to work on carb valve adjustment but will hold that project for the winter. Thanks again for all your comments.
