Hi everyone. Just found this forum- holy crap, have I been missing out!
I'm the proud owner of a 1981 XJ550 Maxim- bought it two months ago as my first motorcycle. I've been having a great time riding and working on it. I hope to have a picture up soon.
I've been working my way through the owner's manual and have the Clymer manual coming soon. I intend to show it lots of love!
    Looking forward to meeting you.

Welcome to the party! Just follow the advice of the members here & ask questions when you need. Then you'll have a fun, fast & reliable ride that will always start & run before you can even lift your thumb from the starter button. Good luck & enjoy!

You're in the right place, and have the right idea.

Be sure to get that thing safe and reliable before you try to actually use it.

Check the "XJ FAQ Suggestions" forum for all sorts of good how-tos. I did the valve adjustment article because the pics in the Clymer suck. If you want to get really serious, track down a factory book. The correct book is the XJ550RH (Seca) book; the "Maxim Supplement" only contains specification changes.

Welcome; lots of nice 550s here. I love mine.

    Thanks for the warm welcome!
Fitz, those factory books looked so awesome that I just had to buy one on ebay. Thanks for the heads up on the model number.
I cleaned the maxim up a bit and took a picture:
The PO painted the gas tank green and put yamaha stickers on either side. It reminds me of Walter Matthau's jeep in Grumpier Old Men.
He also has some Permatex on the right side of the head- it leaks oil on to the pipes, which then makes smoke. He said it needs a head gasket. I intend to adjust valves, synch/time carbs, etc. this winter, so that will be taken care of then.
    It was $800.
