Has anyone made forward controls for their Maxim? I'm thinking of making a set for my bike and wondering what parts you guys used? 8O

Fellow XJ member did an awesome job making his own XJ forward controls. The link to his site can be found in our Links section. Or just click 'here' to see these custom made forward controls :).

Hopefully he'll give us a small write up on the steps for building these?

I just finished forward controls on my Seca xj 750...I used almost 50% of existing parts off the original bike. The main brakets were cut from 1/4" aluminum plate and the foot pegs were moved from their original position forward onto the brackets...controls arms were from Northern Tool and the shifter was original and the brake pedal was a shortened gokart pedal also from Norther Tool...

These controls work well and are very tight hugging to the body of the bike...not at all like the other guys...I can send pics if anyone is interested...It can't be much different for a Maxim..

I've tossed the idea around for a couple of years now regarding forward controls. Am torn between wanting to keep the bike as original as possible and making it a better fit for me and how I ride. Maybe I should just get another XJ and customize THAT one?!?
Regardless, the link and pics of the handlebars and controls are fabulous! Quite professional looking and somehow "fit" the look of the bike. PlainJane - please post your pics in the gallery - I'd love to see another set that is a bit tighter to the body of the bike.
Continuing thanks y'all - I learn something new everyday.

Have been tossing around forward controls for a while also. The pictures from the first response to this thread were just what the doctor ordered. I too wish that he would post how he did that and with what parts. It appears to be some shift linkage from a Harley but at least it has given me some ideas. The only complaint I have had with my trusty 84 XJ-700n is my legs crunched up and this would be perfect.

I thought about forward controls, but it seems like a simpler solution would be highway pegs. It's not often you're shifting, and more often than not you're at speed. I think I'd prefer the option of resting forward or not.

PlainJane, I'm eager to see your conversion. I'm 73" tall and the old Max isn't exactly something I would say is easy to ride for extended periods. I'm interested in fabing my own and would appreciate the ideas. Cheers, Rob.

I too am of a taller stature, 75", and I have installed pegs on my case gaurds, but I do a bit of city riding. It would be nice to be able to stetch at all times, instead of just at road speeds.

I also would like to incorporate the case gaurds if possible.

I'm 6 foot and change - just about 73"... I don't find it terrible for long distances, my biggest problem is the seat.

My solutions? Sit on the passenger seat or rest my feet on the indicator stalks... sure this isn't ideal, but on a wide open highway I do do it.

Highway pegs mounted high and wide on the top of the crash bar would be nice I must admit.

    Nice job on those fabs,
    woot.

I'm a bigger guy for my bike - 72" and 260lbs. I find that for longer rides I like to tuck my feet back up onto the passenger footpegs for a while too. Provides a much more vertical seating position, so it takes some getting used to, but it's a nice break for your backside. It's also fairly nice for changing back to the regular pegs for controls...
    Anyway - just another idea....

here is my forward controls. i modified a set of highway pegs to make them. not the best looking but hey i can stand on them and there is no flex.

to see them check out my gallery. if you would like more detailed pictures and how i made them let me know. total cost was about $70 USD
    __________________END COPY________________________________

btw i am 76" tall and 290 LBS

i would have to say the strangest thing about have'n the forward controls on the xj was the first few rides going to put my foot on the mid controls (after a stop) that were no longer there. but i can ride alot further now.
