'83 XJ750 Maxim obvioulsy has bad petcock. Fuel flows 'RES', 'ON', and 'PRI' position. Filters missing so use inline filter. I use shutoff valve downstream of inline filter. I would love to buy a new one but really need to do a rebuild ...... How difficult is this and what are problems to look out for in the process?

Don't wait that long to fix it. It will only take an hour or two for the job.

I did mine about a month ago with one of Chacal's rebuild kits. Very simple and effective. Like Mlew said, it only took an hour or two tops.

I went and picked up a used on/off petcock and got rid of the vacuum.....straight gravity feed and no issues, and it was only $10.00
