air filter

    I have a '93 xj600. Im curious about the air filter. Should i used a stock filter or will i get better performance if i use an aftermarket? Such as a k&n?

    save your money - use a stock filter.

    Better performance is most completely achieved with total and precise maintenance. Valves adjusted, carbs clean and synched, tires properly inflated, good gas, bearings all lubed well, good oil, good electrical connections. Further but more intensive new rings, new AM High V coils, ground cam, with room an overbore, etc.

    I used to be in the 'more air' camp until I ran some numbers on the stock config. There really isn't (and I stand by this) enough of a difference to be achieved with a new air intake profile than stock. 1-3% is all you will ever gain-so at most a 70hp bike could bump up to 73hp with a %$#@ of work, money, and time-The stock setup is not restrictive in the same way some auto's are. It works really well to feed the mill straight from the factory.

    Of course forced induction, nitrous, and methanol injection are all different stories but making them work is either a major hassle and expensive or is more likely to kill your bike than enhance it.

    +1 I think the k&n is too expensive for something that won't really give you any extra oomph. Also I've read that the hi flow filters let more debris in... If your dead set on upgrading it the foam filters seem reasonable.
