segwaying from my electrical issues thread, I have decided to replace the rectifier and the starter. I have to tap on the starter not to get it to turn over and half of the time it will freeze right back up.

Its is as simple as swapping in the new one like on a car???

I kept reading things about starter clutches and stuff and wasnt sure if that was part of replacing a starter.

Starters are held on with two long bolts, then you slide the planetary side out. The only thing is making sure that you line up the cog properly when re-installing.

Starter clutch is a totally different beast, i believe you'd need to pull the bottom of the engine off (old pan at least), which involves engine removal.

Have a peek at the inside of the outward facing part of the started (carefully). I'm betting you just need new brushes. My gallery has a few comparisons between old and new.

+1 on new brushes. That's pretty common, one of the first things I had to do to mine. For a while I was having to jump a screw driver across the solenoid to start it, pulled the starter out and the brushes were totally worn down. Replaced those and it's been fine for years.

Hey Mwhite, FYI you have to split the cases to access the starter clutch, going thru the oil pan is a no-go.

when the starter is removed, i believe there are three screws on the outside part of the starter, just undo those and genly lift away the cover as there are wires (from the brushes attached there somehow. Make sure you tape up the planetary end as well where you don't want the thing falling apart on you when this happens.

Here's a pic, btw, the brush on the left is new, the top one is toast!

    AHHHH

And the planetary end is.....the end that connects to the engine?

I assume our resident parts guru has the brushes

Len has all the parts you'll need. Either just the brushes, or the entire brush assembly (which is what I bought). It's a pretty simple - Take apart - Clean - Reassemble type of job. I'm pretty sure there is a write up (by Fitz) in the FAQ section.

Yup, planetary is the side that "talks" to the engine. I got the parts from chacal, he should have some on hand for sure! let us know how they look.

    Disconnect the Battery.
Disconnect the HT Lead at the Starter Power Post.
Remove the two Anchor Bolts holding-down the Starter.
    Extract the Starter straight-out.
(You may have to wiggle it a bit. There's an O-ring Seal.

I've been looking for the starter window too. You'd think Yamaha engineers would put it someplace as obvious as the oil window...
