I think my solenoid is out. I have a charged battery but all it does is click when I try to start the bike. any ideas how to test?

Are you positive your battery is holding a charge? What is your open cell ('off') voltage at the battery? A bad battery will cause the solenoid to click instead of starting the bike.

Assuming it IS your solenoid, you can test this by jumping the terminals on it. Turn the bike ON, put it in neutral and preferably on the center stand. Use a screwdriver or pliers - WITH a rubberized handle - and jump the terminals. If the bike starts, it is your solenoid. If the starter turns slow or not at all, then it is a different issue.

Assuming that it is NOT the solenoid, jump the bike off of a car battery. MAKE ABSOLUTELY SURE THE BATTERY IS OUT OF THE CAR OR THE CAR IS OFF: car charging systems can produce higher voltages and fry your sensitive XJ electronics. If the bike starts now, it is a battery related issue. If not, you need to start doing some wiring and starter diagnostics.

Sure. Jump the two big terminals on the solenoid. ***shower of sparks alert*** If the starter spins then, it's the solenoid (or wiring.)
