About a month ago I picked up a sweet 1983 XJ750 Maxim. I rode it for about a month then just had back surgery so while I'm recovering I think I'll go ahead and start working on my bike. I was going to wait for winter, but since I can't ride for a while I need a project.

    Here's a picture. [IMG]

I had no place to put stuff (no storage), so I made a MOLLE gas tank cover. I'm in the military so we use MOLLE to attach pouches and everything else to our body armor, backpacks, and whatever else. Why not use it on my motorcycle too? [IMG]

That's pretty slick. I'm going to have to track me down one but in black instead of digital camo.

I'll probably make another one in multicam, but the digital camo is all I had to work with at the time.

Put on TC Bros drag bars but the choke hits the tank when turning left. I ordered a 2" adjustable riser. As soon as it arrives I'll post more pictures.

Be careful with the risers they tend to foul the ignition barrel.
    Nice bike.

I got the risers today and installed the drag bars. The risers are AWESOME. They allow me to move the bars forward or back and they solved the gas tank clearance issue. They also allow me to lower the triple tree another inch.

I was going to order a bobber solo seat but decided to make my own instead. I sat down and literally traced the outline of my butt. Haha. Used it to make the pattern, then traced it onto sheet metal. I also cut down the Harley seat that I had on it and I'll see which one works better.

I also cut the foam down to fit.

Here it is so far. Need to finish making the seat, lower the front an inch, find a cool tail light, and get new handgrips. :)

I picked up a set of new 12" Harley scocks for $75. Just needed slight modification to make them fit. On the right side I had to fabricate a new lower mount. [IMG]

I got more done on my project. I'm finishing up a spring solo seat too.
Here are a set of Harley shocks I got for $50. They are adjustable for length. [IMG]

Omg, the Molle tank cover is sick! I wish I had one I love it. I want to do the same digi cammo you used, I think that looks sick! It would be nice to cut out the spot for the cap. I would hate to take the idea from you though man, it just looks so nice.

    DeMentedToys,

Love the build, just had a few questions...

How are the risers still working out for you? and can we get a before - after clearance pic? Also why did you pick the Dual Sport risers over the Cruiser risers?

One more thing, I dont know what branch or if your active, reserve, or NG... So, not sure if you go on post, but if you do where are your decals located?

I haven't put mine on yet, but my girl put hers on the forks and they lasted about a week before the forks rubbed and tore them off... So just wonder?

Risers work as they are supposed to; no issues with them yet. Before and after pics of what clearance? If you mean before and after the risers, there are no before because without them the controls hit the gas tank, besides the pics on page 1 of this build thread. Before the controls hit the tank stopping left turns, after at full steering lock the controls clear the tank by about 1/4-1/2". Im not aware of the dual sport vs cruiser risers. These were the only ones I found that raised the bars and allowed me to move them rearward as well. The risers were the only way I could mount the TC Bros drag bars.

I don't live on base, so I don't have decals on my bike. Im AF Security Forces and the base I work at doesn't require the decals anymore (for operational security).

How did you mount the front of the seat pan? Just a flat bar going from the gas tank bolt?

So it has been a while since I updated my build thread. Here are some new pics. I just won best metric bobber at a St Louis bike show. Wasn't really building a show bike but hey, I'll take it. :)

Dude from one AF PoPo to another.... Your ride looks AWESOME!

Gave me a few ideas for my next project.

Till then hope your back has healed enough to allow plenty of time to ride.

Hey man something else you said last year has me asking how in the world did you lower the triple tree? Did you cut new groves for the c clips?

I just slid the forks up a few inches in the triple tree clamps to lower the front a little.

I'm currently building another XJ750. It will be a flat track style bike. I put 2005 ZX6r inverted front forks on it with the 17" ZX6R front wheel and calipers. It's getting dirt bike handlebars and dual sport tires, probably Shinko 705s. Im using an older Yamaha gas tank that's more square and fabricating my own seat/tail section. I cut the shock mounts off and will build new ones about 1" or 2" lower on the frame to slightly raise the rear for slightly more ground clearance and travel. I'll post pics of it at some point. Just finished a Harley flat track bike, and I have an XJ550 street tracker to finish for my gf next before getting back to the 750.

    Hey DeMented
    Just had an idea......
First off, that is a really nice looking bike.
Now for the rear lights, are the turn signal incorporated into the brake light?
Anyway, here's my idea....where the frame tubes are open at the back of the bike, could you drill through from the inside and put a couple of amber signals in the tube end. Use the same style as the brake lights and I think it would look pretty good and fill those open tubes.
    Just a thought.
Here's a cheesy paint rendition to see what I'm getting at:

That's an older picture. I did put 12 gauge hulls in the holes. I planned on drilling the center of the shotgun hulls for super bright amber LED signals, just haven't gotten to it yet. It's a work in progress. :)

So is it correct that you bought lower bars, then bought "2" risers" to raise them?
