I've had to put off working on the XJ for over a month, but before I put the project on hold, I pulled the cluster and noticed a few melted wires. After total disassembly of the box, I found the board and circuit strip were completely melted. My main question is, I haven't been able to get ANYTHING to work without direct power, but all wires have continutiy. Could this issue with the box be the main cause of my issues? We have mild winters, so riding season is pretty much 48 weeks a year and I'd love to get on this bike!

Well, I like the Atari for its weirdness factor, and originality. But if mine gets fried I'm gonna toss it and put some cool round chrome gauges on. This might be your chance to update the look of your bike a little. Search around for "lose the Atari" or whatever, there's a few things you have to rewire to take the computer out of the equation, I think, otherwise it won't work at all. I know mine won't start with the computer unplugged, fried is probably about the same deal.

This thing won't even attempt to light up, turn over, ANYTHING with this fried box. I'm hoping with the craziness of these things that's my main probem.

Ditch the gauges. Go with some easier to find stuff. I went through three speedos and two tachs before I ditched mine. Now a pro cycle tach and a speedo from drag specialties with LED indicator lights that goes to 140MPH so it is actually useful.
