I was just re-reading Rick's carb cleaning instructions and it seemed to indicate that the enrichment valves (plungers) have a tapered end with thin protrusion at the end. Mine have the tapered ends, but that's it. These are Hitacha 33's. Am I mis-reading his instructions?

I don't want to speak for Rick, but his article was based on the hitachi carbs which were standard to most of the XJ bikes, but not All. I have the HSC32 carbs from the 1980 Xj650G like your enrichment valves mine are simply tapered with no "PIN- LIKE" tip. If you really wanted to know which carbs had which enrichment valves - Chacal - could likely give you the history lesson. Doesn't at all detract from the instructions in Rick's article.

Ricks article is excellent I read it numerous times while cleaning mine, great resource.

Mine are Hitacha 33's, and I think they are just like yours. Previously Chacal said that the Hitacha's didn't have the rubber tips or o-rings like the Mikuni's.

(quizzical look) The HSC32s from my 750J most assuredly DO have the "pin-like" tip on the end of the starter plungers...

All Mikuni carbs have a "straight" pin with a tapered point, and this pin has a rubber insulator that is crimped into the main plunger where the pin meets the plunger base.

All Hitachi carbs have a tapered point at the end of the plunger, with no insulator, o-ring, etc.
