I just picked up the Maxim from the local motorcycle shop. he did a carb sync using the YICS tool, adjusted the idle mixture screws and changed where the clips were on the needles. (Dyno Jet stage 1 jet kit installed earlier). Anyway, the bike now starts up great, idles fine and make good power up top but......

When I go full throttle at about 4,000 rpms in 3rd or 4th gear, the engine surges almost like it is missing. It does this until almost 6,000rpms and then it clears up and pulls very strong.

Also, when I am in 1st gear holding it at 6,000rpms, the exhaust is randomly popping.

    What to do, if anything?
    Thanks!
    Joe

I think it would be going back to the shop for them to get it right, and not charge you anymore money. You shouldn't have to go into the carbs to fix things they turned over to you not right. Sounds like the needle clip is in the wrong position, that's where the transistion to running on the main jet is at, but you shouldn't have to be responsible for correcting their work.

Since you already took it to a stealership, hold them responsible.

Many of us won't ever recommend taking an older bike to a stealership, many are crooks, and I find many don't have a clue what they're doing, the one nearest my house screwed up my neighbors R6 bad, I retuned it all for him to fix his problems, but after he'd already forked over $$$ to them. A good bike mechanic I think is more rare then finding a good honest car mechanic for women.
    Good Luck

I agree with russ, they should make it right.
They might try to argue that it's not stock with the stage 1 jet pak but that doesnt make a good excuse for poor mechanicing.

I also wouldn't pay more $ either, this is probably going to take the better part of a days work, they wont want to do it for free, but, how good is their word/work? Or their reputation?
