When I take the starter off the bike, the external gear on it, should that slide in and out to engage with the motor? Should I be able to slide it by hand?

If so I cannot do that with mine. I guess I should disassemble and lube??

The gear on the end of the starter is a fixed position gear. It does not work in the same manner as a car starter bendix. It engages another gear inside the case that drives the starter clutch. The starter clutch is a sprag gear that accomplishes the disengagement of the starter system.

Cleaning, and lubing is recommended though.

    Understood,

next question, I just replaced the start brushes 3 days ago, when I pulled it all apart today to re grease everything I noticed that the brushes already had concave wear to them, should they already have that much wear being in the bike for only a few days?

When you place the square end brushes onto the rounded armature. You have very little contact area. This will cause an apparent accelerated wear pattern as the brushes take seat.

Check the armature to make sure that you can run your fingers over it without feeling any raised edeges in both directions. If you do hapen to feel that the armature is trying to dig in. You can smooth it back out with some emery cloth, or 1500-2000 grit paper.
