rear shocks question

    so 2 days ago was riding my xj750 seca rear shocks felt really smooth (normal i guess )
    today took it for a spin and now its really stiff looked at the adjustment and its set at number 1
    what can cause this bad shocks?

    They lose dampening.
    Springs get tired.
    Sometimes they leak, too.
