the bike has 20,000 on it. breaks/tires have been replaced...I am just trying to get through till I can ride my sled- then all running gear will be thoroughly gone through and inspected I understand what you are saying though and thanks for the heads up! the only one that did not take care of it was my cousin who had it for 3 years (who I got it from.) till next summer its a back road mobile just for 10-20 min rides ...its 30 deg. out witch for a sledder is nothing but when you just sit & catch wind and do no work .....burr

I'm no safety nazi, (you wanna be safe? don't ride a motorcycle, is my attitude) but that delam thing is no joke. I had it happen before I'd ever heard of it on my old Honda. Luckily mine just caused the brake pedal to stick, but no lockup. Scary shiz when I pulled the wheel off to inspect it though. I've had an axle jump out of place on a dirt bike, so that was serious lock-up, ooh boy good thing I was a kid and not my rickety adult self.

wheel bearings & breaks (just because of that thread and piece of mind) are for sure ....what else will be suspect for scrutiny? motor wise and electrical (tested most everything due to being an idiot) are totally sound all fluids look really good. aesthetic wise I just need a Yamaha seat to get rid of the Suzuki one I just put on it to replace the king & queen

You said brakes were done, did you mean just pads? Two main things everybody here will say, check date codes on tires (mine were over ten years old, that's a no go) and check date codes on brake lines. Six years for tires four for brake lines is life expectancy.

Dude, I used to race snowmobiles back in the '70s, when I was young and invincible. I live in Michigan, see profile.

Speaking of which: Your location, which can be very general (but we don't want to send an Ozzie to Auto Zone) goes into your profile. Your bike info (enough so we don't need to keep asking) goes into your signature. Go to "my account" then in the navigation pane at upper left you can choose "My profile information" or "My public profile" and edit those items. Once you get the hang of it, you can get all hinky and add an avatar.

Before you trust the tires, check the date codes. Ditto the brake lines. Crashing a street bike hurts a lot more than crashing a sled. Take it from someone who's experienced both.

Motor-wise, CHECK THE VALVE CLEARANCES. Most ignored bit of XJ maintenance, and the most motor-longevity threatening.

Then you'll get to experience 4-carb hell. And bleeding Yamaha brakes. (WooHoo.)

Welcome aboard. And get a service manual; you're GOING to need it.

If I recall, go to "my profile" edit profile, then change avatar. It has to be less than 500 by 500 pixels or something, even though it doesn't tell you that. I had to crop an image over and over until it would take it.

Sorry, "my account" then "my avatar" then it gives you a bunch of incomprehensible choices, good luck ;)
