    Hi Guys,
New guy here. I just picked up an 82 maxim 550 a couple of weeks ago and i have an issue with it. The bike didn't run when i picked it up so i cleaned the carbs, cleaned the gas tank, new fuel filter, new plugs and now it starts up almost effortlessly and sounds pretty good. Only issue i am having is it only idles with the choke. It doesn't idle too high, about 2000 rpm and even stays running at half choke. Revs up fine also. But as soon as i take off the choke it dies. Could this be a vacuum leak? Any other ideas?

    Thanks

Check for vacuum leaks with raw propane around those carb manifolds. If the rpms pick up you have a leak.

I assume that you tried adjusting the idle with the idle adjusting screw (the big knob between the # 2 and #3 carbs. If so and you find no vacuum leaks then I would pull the carbs and go over the pilot system again. When you check for leaks be sure to check for leaks around the intake boot gaskets--that's where mine was.

I couldn't check for vac leaks today because i didn't have any propane, tomorrow i will do this. I did mess around with the idle screw but what RPM should it idle at both on and off choke?

I used WD40 to check for leaks on my bike!

Idle should be 1050 (or there abouts). Idle on choke is irrelevant and variable.

Idle should be at 1050 plus or minus 50 rpm ( off choke)

    NO it shouldn't.

    It's a 550. Idle speed for the 550s is 1200 RPM.

There's more to cleaning the carbs than just cleaning the carbs.

You need to accurately wet-set the float levels, and do a good bench sync.

Then once your VALVE CLEARANCES are in spec, you'll need to do a running vacuum sync with the YICS blocked.

Until you do it won't idle right or respond to throttle correctly, no matter how much you fiddle with adjustments. The Mikunis reward precision.
