Have I bought the wrong flasher relay?

    Hi all,

    A while ago, I bought 4 aftermarket flasher off evil-bay. They are M7 type bulb, 12v, 10w.

As many of you already know... They didn't flash when properly connected. So I bought an electronic flasher relay for led (even tough my bulbs are M7, not LED)... And they still don't flash. They light up but no flashing.

When I reinstall the original flasher relay with stock flashers, everything works fine.

So here it is... What is the correct flasher relay for my flashers? Is it normal that a flasher relay made for led type bulb doesn't fit M7 bulb?

    Thanks!

Most led flashers should have a big enough range to handle about any kind of signal lights. Did you try swapping some if the wires going to the new flasher around sometimes the pins are in different positions on different types of relays?

Two-pin electronic relay. Most three-pins won't work correctly.

I believe the yellow wire is the one that the relay will not be connected too, but it's been a couple years since I replaced mine so I can't remember for sure.

Buss part # is 522, IIRC

You need to have a LOAD STABILIZER to run LED Flashers.

Either you install LED'S using the LED Flasher and By-pass the Self-cancelling Module, ...

    Or, ...

Install the LED's --> Retaining the Stock Flasher and Self Cancelling Module ADDING 'Dummy-Load' Resistors to draw enough current to trigger the Flasher.

My aftermarket turn signal aren't LED, they are M7 type bulb.

Aren't they supposed to work with the stock relay?

Guys, let's remember, Lewis isn't working with LED.....

And the answer is....Yes, it is normal for most LED flasher relays to not work correctly, not only with M7 bulbs, but any standard 12v bulb.

Because - about 98% of LED flasher relays are three-pin. There are only one or two 3-pin relays that will work with our XJ's wiring system.

For those of you using the search engine to ask about LED bulbs and relays, Rick is correct in what he said.

Also, the load resistors added to the line would also work with bulbs that are standard 12v less than 27w. It's just more time consuming than changing out a relay.

The stock flasher relay only works with 27w and higher bulbs. Your 10w bulbs are not enough of a draw on the system to trip the mechanical relay.

I bought the Tridon EL13 variable load flasher relay. My new bulbs draw 23 watts and all I had to do was switch the wires out of the little plastic terminal on my wire harness, plug the relay in and BAM! Forgot to ground them, but then BAM! I had me some badass blinkers.

Thanks for all your answers. I'll see from here if I'll buy the proper relay or LED blinkers since I already have the relay for them.

Is it connected properly?, most flasher units have codes on each pin. When I fitted an electronic unit, I had to change where the terminals were in the socket to make it work.

I've simply unplugged the stock relay and plugged in the electronic one since they both have 3 pins. I will take a look at it with a multimeter this morning. Thanks for pointing that out!

Finally I tried to change the wires on the relay, connecting them to different terminals... no luck, still doesn't blink.

Unless I find the appropriate relay at an auto parts store, I'll wait to receive my rear fender before putting any more time on this. I'll have to mock up the fender, then buy a brake light with license plate bracket... And then a set of LED blinkers to match.

I'm not in a hurry since we had an inch of snow last night... this is only the beginning of our long and cold winter :-s

    *AHEM*

    $4-$5 at the auto parts.

And you don't have to re-wire anything, just plug the two prongs into the correct two slots.

Thanks alot my friend! You've lead me to the right thread. Problem solved.

For my canadian friends, I bought my relay at Canadian Tire. It's the HD12 model, 8.99$. Plug and play. Just make sure that the brown and brown/white wires are connected to the prongs. No need to bother with the yellow/green wire.
