Somewhere I saw a post on using welding tip cleaners to accurately measure the size of the jets. I got a set today, but they are sizes 6 -- 26. How do I translate these sizes into jet sizes?

Tip cleaners are not made with a great deal of accuracy and would vary by brand and batch. My jets all had numbers on them so unless yours were drilled out, why do you need to measure? If you do measure numbered drills are the way to go.

I think mine are stock, but I just want to be sure since I'm having a problem with fuel consumption. Somewhere someone recommended welding tip cleaners.

Use a dial indicator or micrometer on the wires

A numbered set of drill bits will get you close. There are several jet sizes that are between the numbered bits so even those are not accurate. The proper tools to measure them accuratly are way more expensive then a new set of jets.Just buy new ones.

    Tabaka,
Under this forums heading "XJ Chat" you will see the first sticky that says "Chart Drll Size-Jet Size-Standard-Metric Values" by Rick-o-matic. Here you will find the accurate way to measure your jets. You will need to buy a number drill set not a welding tip cleaner set. Some guys use the welding tip cleaner set to ream jets and carb passages out. I do not recommend using them as they can enlarge the holes to a larger size. I use the proper number drill and gently run it through my jets being careful not to remove any material, just the dryed gas and corrosion if they are turning green.
I'm going to suggest that you need to check your gas MPG another way. You seem to be struggling with your MPG just riding around town there. A real test of MPG is to go on a couple of hundred mile trip on the freeway. Get a good reading on at least two or three tanks and see what you get. Remember you'll never get an accurate reading making short trips around town. Just using the choke a few times while warming up the bike will throw your numbers off. Personally if your plugs are medium to dark brown and the bike runs good and drivability is good I would just ride it and not worry about the MPG. call it a blessing it runs well and remember the gas you put in the tank these days is a far cry from what gas used to be when that bike was new. Besides how do you know it's just not the oil company selling you crummy gas in your area.
