Is it possible the use a 1981 seca 750 engine with a 1983 maxim 650 wiring harness, coils , stator and TCI box? Does the 750 require a higher "voltage" or release of charge from the coils to run? What are the differences between the two wiring harnesses besides the atari, it seems a spark would be a spark. Anyone have any input?

The coils should be fine, just make sure the pickups and cutter wheel is the same. Leave the alternator as is it should plug and play. The advance of the TCI may be a little different but it should run fine.

I'm pretty sure the TCIs are the same (or the 650 max and 750 seca). I have the same two bikes myself... If that's not the case my 750 came with the wrong ignitor :(

Thanks for the input, if they are the same that works, my 750 engine has better compression. Will have to check the timing thought. Best most helpful folks on this site, just awesome!

I am having wiring issues and looking for a new loom for my 81 650 XJ. Two different breakers tried to sell me 750 wiring harness, both swearing that they were interchangeable. They were of course salesman so maybe shouldn't be fully trusted but one said i could take it back and he'd reimburse me if it didn't work, he said he'd swapped them before to get a bike going and worked fine.
