I have had my maxim for about 2 1/2 yrs. This bike has been great for me. Recently I have encountered the problem of the bike slipping out of 1st into neutral. I have read on a few different forums and thought I would get some of my own advice on wether I should just try and find a new motor for it or get into the cases. This site has been very helpful in the past yrs that I have used it and I would like to thank all of you that have taken time to pass your knowledge on to others and helping me keep my bike on the road. I have not done any special mods to the motor only some body modifications. Any advice would be great. I am some what mechanically inclined and could probably handle the tidious labor to be able to fix. But is it worth it or should i find another motor???? Thanks

How many miles on the bike? Have you kept up with maintenance and checks. Oil changes and clutch adjustment. Is it only popping out of 1st or will it do it in other gears under load?

Just read a post about someone having a similar problem with a Venture. Turned out to be a broken spring on the detente, which is an easy fix.

You might have a look at the mechanism before concluding you have a big problem.

On the first reply. Maintenance has been to the t. 24000 miles on it. Still have some stuff planned for it this winter for up keep. Second reply this weekend I was going to pull the shifter side cover and inspect all parts there first. Bike only slips in first no other gears. Also feels like it does not engage all the way into first. Also just changed the oil. But problem started before oil change. Also total mileage I have contributed to 12,000 of those. It's been a great bike.
