Does anyone know of any good reason why I should avoid using a gasket maker product when re-assembling my engine case? I know that Loctite and Permatex offer excellent products. I just never used them on a bike eengine before.

Do you mean using the gasket maker in place of a gasket, or to help seal a new gasket?

If you've split the cases, you'll need to use something like Yamabond to seal them back together, because there's no gasket for that.

When I put in new clutch plates, I looked for hylomar blue, but couldn't find it locally.

I instead then just used good ol permatex ultra black rtv instead of a paper gasket, and it has been leak free and hasant given me any issues.

Thank you all for your advice. I am anticipating splitting the case to do some engine work. I wish to avoid paper gaskets for economic reasons. I would much rather use an RTV. That Hylomar Blue is great to use as a gasket dressing. I have tube I bought years ago but for some reason Pep Boys, and the other stores no longer carry it.
