I cant wait to start my first bobber build. I found this on craigslist for $600 obo it runs and it looks real clean from what i can tell. I really like the hardtail look but i cant weld :( thats the only thing i was confused about because i want my bike lowered. Are there like shorter forks/shocks you have to swap in order to achieve that? I want my bike to have the SAME exact stance as the orange bike down below? Also what websites do you guys get your parts from? Besides ebay. I want to go with a set of drag bars also.

Hey, welcome aboard!! Nice lookin' scoot! I feel like Hulkamania is runnin' wild up in here brother! First things first - you're bound to hear this from the Wizards on here that REALLY know what they're talking about but I'll start it off.. you need to make sure it's mechanically sound and safe to ride before we get crazy with the customizing. I know it's tough, but it's UUBER important.

    - check your compression
    - check the valve clearances
    - check the rear brake shoes for delamination & best to replace all brake lines with SS if possible. You don't want 30 year old brakes to be the only thing between you and your maker.

    There will be more...

Now that we've got that covered.. you can check my build signature in my thread for a couple ideas. I hacked the back of the frame off with a sawzall and switched out the shocks with a stock set from a Suzuki Savage 650. Some don't recommend this due to your bike being heavier from the factory but it worked fine for me. I did strip about 75 lbs. of "the 1980's" off so that helps but I'm also pushing 280 right now and haven't bottomed them out yet.

Any more questions just ask, cheers!

Thanks man! Lol. Your build definitely is an inspiration. I just cant wait to rip this thing apart. Hey also I was just curious, i think I overheard somesome say that the bikes fuseblock is tied into the instrument cluster which prevents it from being ditched. Can you confirm this? Thanks.

I used the info from this thread to ditch the guages and works like a charm. You just have to bypass a few wires.

The fuseboxes on these bikes are basically garbage. It's best to just update it with a more modern spade-style fuse block like this (straight swap, wire-to-wire):

Chacal is our local parts guru. His prices are reasonable but his service is outstanding- he can set you up with the fuse block or just about anything/everything else you need. Just click on the XJ4ever logo in the top right corner and send him a message if you need parts. It's confusing at first because there's not really a website or "catalog" but if you get in touch with him he'll take care of you.

i stayed with my stock suspension and forks on my build and just lowered the seat platform and it makes it look like a lower stance on the bike overall. u can check out my bike in my gallery. and as for the fuse box.... well there garbage as said be4. first upgrade i would do the fuses for sure then do ur research on xjbikes.com and find out exactly how u wanna do ur build it and ask PLENTY of questions cause were all here to help out.
