Am fresh to this forum, have seen much discussion and incredibly helpful responses about lighting issues for XJ's , I just want to replace OEM signals and tailight with something less obtrusive. Can anyone recommend examples that are plug and play, perhaps NOT LED,that will have proper wattage to operate without any additional parts ( relays, resistors,) or effort on my part ( curses, trips to ER ) Thank you in advance for any assistance.

what bike are you working on (add it to your signature)

Anything that runs a standard 1156 type bulb for signals 1157 for tail/brake will be fine electrically. Mounting depends on the bike.

Thank you for your prompt response, this forum completely rocks! Next question : Are all 1156 & 1157 bulbs of sufficient wattage to actuate the mechanical relay( learned about this on this forum) and who has a good selectionton of signal and tailights that use these bulbs?

To the best of my knowledge all standard 1156 and 1157 run the same wattage (1156 = 27 watts, 1157 = 5-8 watt low element 21 watt high element). They do make led versions of the bulbs which draw significantly less wattage.

Also I should note the X has some differences from the other xjs and I am not 100 sure about their electrical system. I believe their flashers requires the same draw as the other xjs (27 watts per flasher). The brake/tail light however may not have any wattage requirement on it if it doesn't have any kind of warning light attached to it.

Signals and taillights should be readily available from most bike websites/shops.

In regard to 1156/1157, yes; those are what the original bulbs were.

I installed "modern Yamaha pattern" signals, similar to what comes on the FZ/FJ series, made by K&S. Chacal carries them; they will need their bulbs swapped though. They can hold 1156's, but they come with a cheap lower-wattage bulb.

Ok , It seems all I need do is purchase non led lights that use 1156's and put the bulbs from my OEM signals in them and I am good to go. Thanks for the consultations.
