As i've mentioned before, i dont have spark yet on my XJ. Fitz provided a link to chacal's relay / electrical post that provided a lot of good info, and he also sent me the wiring diagrams and cable routing. VERY APPRECIATED - this site rocks.

My question relates to the safety circuit relay. In looking at the wiring diagram, it seems that simply unplugging the safety starting circuit relay located under the tank will not bypass it, but in fact, screw everything up.

Here's my thought - if i connect ground to the blue/white wire at the starter solenoid (labeled starter switch on the diagram), and the starter cranks, that to me says that everything (kill switch, safety relay, sidestand, neutral and clutch safety) is "satisfied". It would also mean the 10 amp ignition fuse works. This is what ive seen on the diagram at least.

Thoughts? The reason i ask is the chacal post about relays and what have you says to unplug the safety circuit relay to bypass it.

That's how to "bypass" it, yes.

Because the motor is cranking doesn't mean the safety circuit is "happy." PART of the safety circuit (look at the fault isolation diagram I sent you entitled "...starting") allows/disallows the engine from turning over; but the safety cutout also shuts down the TCI.

So does pulling that relay actually bypass it?

Pulling the Relay disables the Safety Circuit and sets the Bike into a Safety Default mode.

The Bike MUST be in Neutral to be started.

Compare the wiring diagram to the circuit diagram, and then look at where in the circuit the diode(s) are.

Any chance I can get that diagram and link? I've been riding my 85 XJ700 around the neighborhood for test rides while working on her and this miorning I decided I would take her to work. Well, soon as I kicked her into gear she died. Didn't matter if the kickstand was up or down.
I guess it's not quite ready as a daily rider yet and I have to learn about some more electricals.

The Side Stand isn't the only thing to check.

The ROD that the Side Stand activates (moves) may be stuck.
You might have to Overhaul the ROD and TUNNEL it protrudes through at the Side Stand.

    Remove the Switch
    Remove the Rod
    Clean the Rod
Shine the End of the Rod that Protrudes through the Tunnel with 800
Clean the Tunnel with Spray Carb Cleaner
Twist 400 or ScotchBrite Pad to Clean the Inside Diameter of the Tunnel
    Oil the Tunnel and Rod
    Reassemble

Thanks Rick - I hadn't even considered a mechanical issue. I'll take that down tonight and give it a once over.
I'm still struggling with the dissapointment of not riding in to work....

    You were spot on Rick.
Cleaned up that rod and the switch in general and all is well.
    Thanks! :D
