Mark Laurence has condensed 75 hours of his research into a single article explaining everything you would ever need to know about oil.

He also sells windshields and other stuff.

The Rotella- T 15w-40 looks like an excellent choice for XJ's.

Just read the whole article start to finish. Good stuff. Will try RotellaT synthetic for winter here soon, have been using RotellaT 15w40 for a while now happily.

Finally! Nothing better to stir up conflict on a motorcycle forum than a good oil thread... I am running Shell Rotella- T 15w-40 in my Seca, and have used it in my previous wet clutch bikes. I usually use Mobil 15-50 synthetic in my dry clutch bikes.

Additionally, on the topic of oil, I feel it's very important to use motor oil in a motorcycle; there are many moving parts in there that need to stay lubricated. I also believe that it's good to periodically change the oil used in a motorcycle, because when it starts to get old it doesn't work as well as when it was new... Some may disagree, but that's my opinion.

RickB, don't be ridiculous. That's the most absurd opinion I've ever heard. You can tell by that newfangled 'recycled' oil they're advertising that the stuff we take out is still good! And like the article says, only 3% of the oil goes bad! The rest is still fine! Just another money making scam by the big wigs...

Bigfitz: if it ain't broken, eh?

I think the preference for most of us is to leave the drain plug slightly ajar, and just add new oil every morning, or at gas stops on the ride.

Keeps it much fresher that way, and so much easier than the whole oil change process. What a hassle.
