I haven't ever put anything in that box under the seat on my bike, as I thought there was a lid missing. I know on like, the 550 there is a locking lid. But looking on the internet, some tool boxes seem to have just a rubber strap to hold that silly factory tool kit in place, others nothing at all, just a box. Is the seat supposed to serve as a cover to the box on the 750? Or what? I can't seem to find any pictures of a complete under the seat area of a 750 Maxim as it came from the factory. Ebay is no help, found a "1981 750 Maxim" box with a lid, but since that bike doesn't exist...

Follow-up, if I am missing a lid or strap or whatever goes there, what's a good way to store tools there? Registration and stuff too, that's why a lid would be nice.

My Uk xj750 only has a strap to retain the tool pouch. if the maxim is the same and you look inside the tail section you should have two strap hooks. Similar to the strap that retains the battery.

I would have thought that anything small and loose would be likely to bounce around and fall out !

    Hope this helps :)

In the 550 Secas, the "tool tray" is just that, a tray. No strap or anything, the seat acts as the lid (sorta.)

I was going to check the fiche for similarity but I cannot for the life of me find the tool tray in the 750 Max fiche.

The seat has a gray foam pad that fits against the tool tray when in place. The tray has a 90 degree lip that meets the foam pad for a better seal. On both my 750's I can see the impression in the foam of the lower edge of the tool tray as well as the two bolts that hold the tray in place. A lid would make it impossible for the seat to fit correctly. The parts diagram of the tool tray, which is in the Seat diagram for the Maxims, shows no lid.

To comment on your mention of where to put registration, etc., my 550 Seca seat pan actually has a small plastic pop-off "tray" that engages two slots in the seat pan.

I fold up my registration in a Ziploc bag, then fold up the Ziploc bag so it fits into the tray. It would be interesting to see if your seat pan has a couple ~2 inch long slots in it, with a missing plastic tray. Or maybe the 750 Maxim doesn't have that, er, feature.

Some have the tray, some have the strap, some have the compartment, some have an attachment to the bottom of the seat. All depends on the bike.....

Hogfiddles, is there a picture, or better yet a video, of your bike collection somewhere? I'd love to see it. I know it's random, but I swear I ogle your list of bikes every fifth time I see a post by you...

Ok, kinda what I thought. Thanks all. I also used to put registration in a ziploc bag in the tray, but it didn't seem secure. I'm gonna look at it a little closer, see if I can mod it to be more of a compartment than a tray. I don't think my seat fits close enough to put fuses and bulbs and whatever in there without them rattling out. I have an idea how to do it, will follow up later.
