I'm not sure how safe it is on those bronze screws... But I did a write up about using the craftsman screw extractor ( http://xjbikes.com/Forums/viewtopic/t=4281.html ).

If you can get a replacement for the idle screw, it shouldn't be a big deal to extract it. Either it will pull itself out as you start to drill the hole in it, or you will be able to drill the hole, then you can extract it.

Just be careful not to get any metal shavings inside that hole. That will cause you even bigger problems.

    1) Pilot drill hole
    2) Insert E-Z Out
    3) Soak with Aero Kroil
    4) Remove the screw.

Follow gremlins advice and if you find a source for the pilot screws let us know, I can't be the only other bloke here that needs to replace them.

No need to give up. Old bikes are only as good as their previous owners.

Newer bikes, or even brand new bikes can have just as many problems. It just matters if the owner took care of it or not. Also, always keep in mind that a bike motor can be very sensitive to even the slightest changes.

Pull one of the non-stripped idle mixture screws out and take it to a dealer. They may be able to get some for you, either by specific part number, or they may match one they have in stock for another bike / carb. If not, I'd head to the junkyard. You just gotta find one, but if you can source them, get 4 new ones.

I would definitely leave that one in until you can verify that it is in fact the source of your problem, as once you destroy it further, you've passed a point you cant go back to.

I you are on good terms with your dentist go to him and ask him to cut a new screwdriver slot in it with a 557 carbide bur. If this works then you can still use the screw.

How about a replacement once you get it out. I did some digging. How about this for the hitachies. The part number on top is for the hitachiHitachi carb

And this for the mikuni's The part number on the bottom is for the mikuni.mikuni

That looks like MIKUNI to me ...

You have a little bit of Wiggle Room on the MIKUNI. Look in there. See how much of the Carb Body there is before it's threaded. That much of that little "Top Channel" ... down to close to where the Ultra-fine Thread starts can be removed ... in a severe situation.

As BlueMaxim suggests ... I'd be on the way over to see your Dentist. He'll have the tool and the steady hand to save your butt.

You need to come up with ... "The Incentive" ... for him to do the job.
Caddy, lawn mowed, paint something ... take him riding, a gift certificate.

Other than that ... you got to do the drilling-out.
There's a section on drilling-out, drill sizes and EZ-Out sizes is in my Carb Cleaning piece ... "Whole 9 yards"

you can always use the internet and look for salvage yards who advertise online. Usually your request will be sent out to multiple yards and they will ask you what part you need and you tell them. Through personal experience i have found they have absolutely any part you need. They typically get back to you by email within a business day with a price.
