    Hi XJer's,

Good to be back posting after a few months. Anyway, I got a Lockhart oil cooler off ebay, and would like to ask some advice.

Is it a simple bolt on, using the longer centre bolt ? Where can I order one of those ?

How do I prime the cooler before running the motor again ?

Any advice in general would be great, so thanks in advance, as usual.

    Yepper

ps Will try to put up a few pics of the cooler, in case it's of use.

I got a standard XJ cooler and adaptor.
No longer bolt, there is an adaptor bolt (36 ft lb) that holds the adaptor plate onto the motor that the standard bolt then goes into.

That's all great to hear ! Thanks to you both. If anyone can recommend a supplier of that adaptor bolt, I'd appreciate it.

    Yep

    yepper:

Lockhart coolers are "Bare-ended" ... you need and Inlet and an Outlet from the Oil Gallery to make it work.

XJ-Bikes integrate the Inlet and Outlet by using an Oil Cooler Adapter Plate which fits right ON the Oil Filter Housing. The Circular Adapter fits on the Oil Filter Attachment and is secured there with a "Bolt" that runs through the Adapter and is hollow and threaded for the OIL FILTER Bolt.

Congrats on the cooler. I have been looking for one for my 550, but haven't seen any that don't look completely abused.

    btw...

anyone know where to get a new o-ring for the filter housing...the big thick one? Just a dealer part?

Advance Auto Parts (among others) carries the Fram filters. In my local AAP they're on an aisle shelf unit near where all the motor oil is.

    Rick,

You got me fretting now ! The apparatus I have is not finned, but does have the same arrangement of oil lines at either side, to and from the radiator. It also has a pressure valve. I think I'm good to go ?

Will post pictures as soon as I can resize them.

    Yepper,

Assumed you got one that had been fitted to a XJ previously? If you have then it should be n problem. MS paint should be ok to resize pictures for here.

    Midnight,

EBay? They seem to be hard to find. Any XJ model will fit.

I didn't know you had the Adapter.
I thought you scored the Lockhart Cooler -- only.
If you have the part that mounts-up behind the Filter -- you're Good-to-GO.

Yeah Kiwi, it was advertised as being off a 750, and when I offered it up, the brackets and bolts all look right.

    Looks good too.

I've seen a couple on ebay from Germany in the last three weeks.

    Midnight, you have PM...

Ok Rick, thanks again. About priming the cooler... do you have any strong opinion about that ?

I seem to recall a posting where someone ( maybe Hoonz ? ) described running with an open line until oil appears, in order to get rid of air. Just can't find that thread at the minute though.

    What you think ?

When I put the 900 Cooler on my Max ... I just pulled the Plugs out and used a push-button jumper-switch to crank-over the engine. I gave the engine -- four -- ten-second cranking-overs to get some oil moving in there before I fired it up.

    No problem.
    Running good.
Love having the Cooler on it!

yeah it is hard to find, and one in good condition is nearly impossible. So good luck.

I have not been lucky myself.
