Hey all I just got a 1981 XJ650 maxim for a pretty good deal....I traded a fish tank for it :D

its not running and needs some work but i feel im up for the challenge. Ive been in the vdub world for a while and I like to "tinker". this will be my first go at a bike so go easy. see you out there.

    Welcome Smokeater!

How could you trade a fish tank for an XJ! That's just crazy!! 8O Oh wait I have an old tank....kidding! That's a bang up deal unless it was a 1000 gallon tank.

If you've worked on the old VW's (I had a '74 Type I) then you have basically worked on a horizontally opposed motorcycle engine. There are some design differences with the valve train, clutch, and tranny but the XJ motor is FAR easier to access and hence work on. You have your foot in the door with that old Deuschlander das auto.

Feel free to ask questions and be sure and make your old classic safe before you ride on. Best to go through all the standard maintenance and inspections to be safe starting with brakes of course. Not starting can be many things but the basics are where you must start: fuel, air, compression and spark. Battery fully charged is a must (both to start) and so you can check compression which is the best place to start if the motor turns freely.

    Nice handle by the way.

Thanks for the warm welcome guys. The handle is a play on my line if work.....can you guess what I do?
I'm looking forward to getting the bike going but I promised the wife that the super will be ready for her to drive to work before I lay a wrench on this bike:)

Welcome smokeater, I did some volunteer on a local FD back in my early days. We were out in the country, on an almost non-existent budget, so it was tough.

Anyway, my cousin had a super for awhile, ended up selling it when moving.

Congrats on the new ride, and welcome to the club.

Pjk that's cool man. We live in a small town that offers a pretty good variety of fire and EMS calls as well(I'm a medic too)

Never sell your VDUBS! Mine is actually my wife's. but lord knows she ain't the one building it.

    Welcome from VA smokeater
This is the place to be to learn all you need to know about these bikes. Ask away with the questions and before you know it you will be answering someone elses questions. Nice trade by the way.

Welcome and hope this web site is a wonderful resource for you. It would be fun to meet up with these guys at one point. I am a fair weather rider and get several complements on my classic bike. It is a fun hobby to jump into.
