    Hello,

    Here's my bike - 1985 XJ700 Maxim. I rode a little dirt bike when I was 8 years old, since then it's been lots of pedaling. Now I'm feeling they joy of the clutch in the left hand again... Also love driving cars, I'm discovering the motorbike is the best of both worlds in many ways. This is a great helpful forum, thanks for all the info and if I learn enough to help I'll be glad to.

    PS I discovered the liquid-cooled XJ700 is an "X" model, wondering what the "N" is? Any comments appreciated.

    The "X" was a tariff-buster. Meaning, the U.S. was placing a big tariff on importing foreign bikes over 700cc, to help ailing Harley-Davidson, I guess.

    I am not sure about your "N" unless it's just the same letter code they used on other bikes, that is, mine is a 750 "J" because it's a 1982, the 1983 is a "K' and so on. But the X had five valves per cylinder and was a little more "souped up" than yours, to try to compete with bigger displacement bikes without the actual displacement part of it. Again, this is all U.S. stuff, in other places you could get a 750 X which we didn't get :(

    XJ700XN = 1985 700 Maxim liquid cooled.

    Nice, thanks for the info all. Glad to be here!

    I've changed the engine oil and my friend helped me balance the carbs. Perhaps the timing may need adjustment still. I'm planning on fresh spark plugs and oil in the drive shaft next.

    Timing is fixed. You'll need to check and adjust your valve clearances, then re-do your running vacuum sync to smooth out the idle.

    TIMEtoRIDE, I just saw the brake warning recently, that's a definite priority. I appreciate the heads up! Fitz - thanks for the tips, I can tell it's not idling perfectly so will add those operations to the list.
