I have a friend - honest - who has an XS750 which stood for a couple of years (It was running - just). The rings managed to sieze, which he managed to free off (plus gas and pushing it in gear) but one of the cylinders has no compression.

I wonder if the valves could also stick open?

They sure can it will be a sticky valve its a rare case however. I been around motors for 8 years and seen it happen once it was a twin can motor and the valve got sucked in the piston but the stem was cracked along with bad valve seal. Also bad rockers and push rod can leave them open but the can will be damged from the drag. That is just saying and just an answer to your?

More likely the rings are stuck in their "lands" (grooves) in the piston and not sealing properly.

And yes, a valve could very well be stuck open. Checking the clearances will reveal that (huge clearance on the stuck one.)
