Thought instead of creep'n I'd post a quick Ahoy. I bought a 82 XJ1100j late 2011 and rode it as it was last summer. Love the bike. Once fall hit the bike seemed not to want to be ridden. I'd be riding then it would power out like two or more cylinders were starved of fuel. So I parked it and am now waiting until spring to figure it out. Well here is a couple of pics.

Welcome aboard. First things you'll want to check are: Brakes(pads, shoes, lines and MC) rear brake shoe material is known to separate from the shoe - Fuse box(check for loose or corroded connections and replace with new fuse box and fuses if necessary) best to replace to avoid trouble down the line - Valve clearances(check before carb sync) - Clean carbs and sync.
How old are the tires? If they are older than 5 years, you'll want to replace.

The tires are good. I've replaced the front brakes the rear seem good so far (although The front fluid reservoir screw heads are stripped so I'll probably end up redoing the system in stainless.) . I figure the electrical can wait until a tear down unless it is the culprit of the engine issue. I forgot to mention I have to do the 1st Gear fix as it has issues with it. I love this guys build and planned on doing something close to that. http://xjbikes.com/Forums/viewtopic/t=38221.html

When we talk about rebuilding the front brakes, we don't mean just pads.

We mean caliper and master cylinder seals (had a factory-recommended TWO YEAR lifespan) and brake lines (were only supposed to last FOUR YEARS.) If you can't get the top off your M/C then you haven't rebuilt the front brakes.

Check the DATE CODES on those "good tires." They're tubeless; anything over 5 years or so old is dangerous regardless of remaining tread. If they have three-digit date codes, or no date codes, they're for sure too old. Current tires (since 2000) have a four digit date code.

Unless you physically inspected the rear shoes for delamination, the rear brake could still be an accident waiting to happen. Read: http://xjbikes.com/Forums/viewtopic/t=15874.html

And don't ignore the valve clearances. They were supposed to have been checked at 3000 miles, then again every 5000. They tighten with mileage, not loosen. Too tight and you'll burn a valve.

Welcome from Canada - Since you have now connected with this great resource and were smart enough to wait until checking out the engine before driving too much your half way to getting her up and running like new again. I can't tell you how much help this group was for me.

Guys, remember that the XJ1100 didn't have rear drum brakes, it is disc all the way around. Delamination on the rear pads wasn't really an issue. The brakes should be gone over regardless.

Thanks for the welcome. Still a few months of winter left before I can get at it. Unless I can find some shop time. Might just take the season off riding and rip her apart.
