Maxim valves are super TIGHT...

    Just checked the Maxim's valve clearances... man are they tight:

    Intake (in MILLIMETERS!!): 0.06, 0.06, 0.06, 0.03
    Exhaust (in MILLIMETERS!!): 0.11, 0.06, 0.17, 0.06

    On the bright side, at least I have one valve in spec, and based on the installed shims, I can reuse ONE of the other 7 shims...

    Not surprising if they were ignored. When I got my '83 550, it had 7100 miles on it, completely untouched, and seven of eight were tight.

    This is why it has to be Job 1 when bringing an XJ back to life. (Which you already know; I'm pointing it out for the benefit of all the procrastinators reading this thread.)
