Nice trip. The things that dreams are made of. It seems that no matter what hobby I have, there are always moments like that. The best one's are the one's that are not planned or only planned half way.

    Hi bigfitz:

Nice clean bike and excellent photo. I love the black-with-red-decal scheme just like my in-pieces-now-getting-recommisioned '82 RD350.

Something just caught my eyes and bothers me a bit. Looking at the tires, it seems the rear tire is mounted correctly, in that the treads would channel water outward, away, when rolling forward.

However, the front treads seem to channel water inward, toward the center, promoting hydroplaning when going forward.

    Did I get this wrong?

    Vince.

What? You guys don't ride in "slight" rain, even sometimes?

Here in the "W(et)est coast", I quite often riding in slight rain. Even when it is not raining, the road could be moist and slick, plus lots of large and small puddles to surprise me.

So I am accustomed (paranoided) to looking at tire treads.

ElkHavenSeca, here is a photo as requested. I just put lights on the saddle bags (I ride at night a lot, too, and we get dark at 3PM in the winter), and GPS.

By the way, didn't you just sell your SECA?

Sorry, shouldn't have hijacked this thread!!!

    absolutely! preachin' it!!

For the last 4 years i've traveled out west for 2-3 weeks with my mountain bike on the roof of my wagon, not ever planned where the next destination is, i just go and figure it out along the way!

Heres my weekend pack on the bike, im more than fine sleeping under the stars or under a tarp if its raining - so i pack lighttt.

I like doing it this way as well as it provides a nice backrest.

For longer trips or if the lady comes along, i also have a rear rack that I can put on.

Yes, you did. Those are Avon AM26 RoadRiders, and they are mounted correctly. (There are directional arrows molded into the sidewalls.)

The tread pattern isn't "pointed" in the direction it is just to sipe away water; front and rear tires have different traction requirements. The rear tread is oriented for maximum "driving" traction, the front tread is oriented for maximum braking traction (in other words, they're effectively "pushing" the other way.)

I can also attest to their wet-weather performance. As good as Dunlops have always been for me, the Avons work even better in the wet.

It threw me at first too, until I did some research.

Avon's website shows many sizes of those tires as universal (usable front or rear). Are you saying you mount it one direction for the front and the opposite direction for the rear?

I was just wondering about the same thing.

If say the 120/90x18 on our REAR happen to be the same FRONT size for another bike. Would one mount it as indicated by the arrow, or in reverse for the sake of the tread pattern?

Yes-- the tires that Avon offers for "universal" mounting DO have to be mounted one way on the front and the other direction on the rear.

Most tires like that (the Dunlop K81's on my Norton for instance) have TWO arrows on them; one arrow says "front wheel rotation" and one says "rear wheel rotation."

The tires on my black bike are "dedicated" front/rear mounting and are mounted as directed by the arrows on them.
