xj 650 valve adjsting tool

    I want to adjust the valve shims on my xj650 1981 but reading the forum I require a tool, I cant find one in the uk, could anyone tell my where to get one in the states thank you, and what is the cost

    Casper, you do not havo to have he tool. It may help to hold down the valve shim buckets but this job is totally doable withoutthe tool. Here is a video that helped me through the job:

    the tool is easy to get, but you can search the forums here for the 'Zip Tie Method'. It is a whole lot quicker and easier.

    I have two of the tools, sometimes use them for practice, but decided to try the zip tie method at one point, just so I could prove it was not as effective, and ended up doing the job in less than half the normal time. Plus if you have two people, you can actually do two valves at the same time......

    Indeed. The tool didn't work on my 750J, so I *had* to use the zip tie.

    I use the Electrical wire method, using the solid core wire you can manipulate the end to tuck into the valve seat easily.

    that works too, just make sure that the wire is softer than the valve or the seat.
