Hi, i have an exhaust valve with 0 clearance and a 265 shim. my question, since it should fall between .16 and .20, should I go down to a 250 shim, or a 245?

ps. im doing this after a headjob (valve lapping, valve seals, all new gaskets and o rings) so i most likely wasnt running with these problem.

I'm leaning toward the 245, but want the advice of people who have done this once, or twice, or preferably 100 times.

265 = 2.65 mm. A 250 shim will get you to .15, a 245 will get you to .20 so you NEED to use the 245

Start with the 245 shim then remeasure it. If its within spec thats good, keep going. I would re-check it after the engine has some runtime on it. Maybe a couple hunderd miles. Tight valves can have carbon buildup on the seat. That will through the readings off, running the engine with the clearences close will get it off.

Theres deffinantly no carbon on the seats lol, i just lapped all the valves, and the 0 clearance came from having to lap that valve twice. I get how it works and its kinda a stupid quesiton, but i was going off the chart in the book. Thanks, ill deffinatly use the 245, not a big todo with guys like hogfiddles. this site is awesome

Definitely START with the 245, but depending on "how zero" it was you may need to go down yet another size.

Once installed, turn the motor over a few times to be sure the shims are all well seated and then re-check your clearances (all of them.)

It's not a stupid question at all.
