oil indicator

i need help! i went to start my bike earlier this week, i let it run for 10 mins. After shuting it off i saw through the looking glass that were was no oil, so i decided to put more and i still see nothing! what do i do? and how much is too much?? and what will happen if i do put a lot?

 

Welcome. Pls put your bike details in your signature block so we know what we're dealing with. Put bike on level ground and fill to mark next to sight glass. Hard to know where the oil has gone without more details....been on a long run recently?

Two things. When the bike is running, you won't see oil. If the bike is on the sidestand, you won't see oil.

The oil level is checked with the bike on the centerstand, or held vertical; and the engine has to have been OFF for at least 5 ~ 10 minutes so the oil has had a chance to gather in the sump.

Overfilling is a common mistake and you can fill your air filter up with oil via the breather. Be careful.

 

I have a 85 maxim x. So what do I do if I over filled it?

 

Drain some and check the air filter

 

? He said he checked it after he shut it down. There is a short return period before it drains to the sump but in a hot engine this is only around 3 mins

 

Right. But if not fully warmed up, it can often take over 5 minutes. I built a "margin" into the advice.
