buggered idle screws :(

    hey i ordered my colortune plug and built my monometer to sync the carbs and hit a bit of a snag. the PO seems to have not fully grasped the concept of finesse and stripped almost every screw on the bike. master cylinder cover, choke bracket, bowl screws, and more importantly the idle mixture screws. i am competent with a set of EZ outs but want to know if this is the appropriate solution. i filed a screw driver down to try and make it fit better and used a penetrating lubricant but they are too far gone.
    any help would be awesome,

    Time to order up a new set of screws and get busy with the EZ-outs. I'm sorry to be the bearer of bad news. There is a fellow turning out really trick screws with extended adjustment knobs but I don't know where the link for them is. Hit the search option and start with idle mixture screws. Someone else remember that link?

    I had this problem.

    Reverse-threaded drill bits, screw extractors, ez-outs, penetrating oil... a combination of all these things will work.

    I found replacement mixture screws by emailing the guys at http://www.motorcyclecarbs.com, after a tip from someone else. If they don't have originals on-hand, they get replicas machined.

    wow i got a quote from motorcyclecarbs.com for the mixture screws at 32.00 each! is that for a set of four or is that really for just one screw? has anyone else has to buy these things?

    Ah, motorcyclecarbs.com is way too pricey. I'd suggest you check out sudco.com. I don't know if they havwhat you need but if they do, it will be a reasonable price.

    I have good used idle mix screws available from carbs I'm parting out, let me know if you need any, perhaps $5 each with good heads (may have some witness marks in the screw slot, but NOT buggered up).

    Also new idle mixture screw washers, o-rings, and some used idle mix springs, too.

    And new throttle shaft seals, bowl gaskets, bowl drain screws, etc.

    And not only that, it appears that screw is brass? Is that from a ferrin' (non-Hitachi) carb...?

    brass Hitachi screw, soldered with gunsmith paste solder while it was still in the carb body
    had to do it twice :cry:
    they came out real easy, i guess when you use heat you need a lot of heat
    don't be too impressed the next step was going to be a toss in the junk box

    Well I'll just be a set of little brass balls on a hitachee donkey statue.....I've never seen a brass idle screw on all the carb sets I've ever torn into.

    Bet they just strip their threads if you look at them wrong!

    But they are shure r purdy to look at.........

    i've only tore two sets of hitachi's apart and the score is brass 7 steel 1

    Careful when getting replacement idle screws. I purchased a set of carburetors for parts just a few weeks ago. Everything on the carburetors was identical, but the idle screws had a coarser threading than the carburetors I had.

    Todd....were the replacement carbs Hitachi's? All of the Hitachi carbs that I've seen have that really fine thread for the idle mixture screw....except for ones that have been buggered and cross-threaded, and you can tell they've been deformed from original by how the threads are "squeezed" or sheared. The threads I've seen look just like that brass screw pictured above, but in a gray soft steel.

    I think the brass screws were maybe used in the later Hitachi's, the HSC33 series?

    From what I've heard, the Mikuni idle mix screws have a different thread. I think there is a great picture thread by user ALIVE on this site that has great pictures of both a set of Mikuni's (off a 900) and a set of Hitachi's where you can see some difference........

    They were Hitachi and were identical to carburetors on my 82 650 Seca except for the idle screws. The carburetor bodies were not what I was after, so I was still able to get everything working.

    Hi I just came across this post looking for parts for sale I'm sure you've done somthing with this problem already.but for anyone in the future that has this problem an easy solution is to take a dremel with a cut off wheel on it and just cut the slots deeper or for problem bolt's with no screwdriver slot's cut some and they'll come right out . you can use with any type bolt or screw.allen's,star's.
    No more drilling and easy out's like this.
    I use this method all the time and it work's great even if the bolt or screw is broken off flush this will work. as long as you have room to cut a slot.

    Ps. The bigger the screwdriver you can use the easier it will come out.make sure not to cut the slot's to wide.Just make them the the width of the cut off wheel and try and cut them at least .050 deep if possible and they will come right out. The deeper the slot's the better.

    thats how i got my bugger out....i used 2 cut off wheels until i reached the screw then i used one to make a new slit..... holy smoke im in 3rd gear 8O

    hang on were cookin with gass now baby :lol: :lol:
