Hi Guys.. I've just bought my first XJ 650 Maxim (1987). It has been rebuilt by a friend reasonably well (in my opinion). I stumbled upon this website the day I bought my bike and I'm really glad that I did! I've found the forums very informative and interesting. I'll be looking to customize my bike during next winter so will need alot of help and tips from you guys. Unfortunately no parts are available locally for this bike but I have a couple of friends in Houston (and now you guys :D ) that I will ask for assistance when I go for the customization. I've attached a few pics so let me know what you think. By the way, the kid on the bike is my son. :)

Hey thanks for the warm welcome guys.. Waleed (my son) is only 14 so he's only allowed to take pics not drive :) but he's quite happy that I got this bike and enjoys riding with me. Thats why I'm still contemplating whether I should turn it into a bobber or not.. its just that the bobber look is soooo much more awesome than the original style.. :)

Welcome, Farhan. Nice detailing on that bike. I'm sure your son will want his own as soon as he can; we all recognize that smile he has from looking in the mirror ourselves.

    Welcome !!
To help you order parts post your VIN# off the frame or motor, and we'll tell you what year your bike REALLY is. It looks like a YICS motor to me, which would be '82-'83.

Oh my God!! This forum is AMAZING!! I mean the more I dig into it the better it keeps getting! Any bike enthusiast should be a member in my opinion whether or not they own an XJ!

With that excitement out of the way :p, I'd like to thank everyone again, especially "TIMEtoRIDE" for adding the two invaluable "Newbie" links in his signature.

I'm rather new to the whole biking thing but I'll tell ya after going through a few posts I'm absolutely psyched to go out and get myself a tool box and become a total greasehead! :) I'll try not to get too excited and ruin things like the carbs etc.. so first stop will be checking the brakes on the coming weekend.

Does anyone know where I can get my hands on an electronis manual for the bike?

"TIMEtoRIDE" my brother from Down Under.. I might be heading to Perth for a couple of days around the mid of March. Do you know of a spare parts store there that stocks on XJ parts?

HI and welcome from Denver, CO. That is a nice looking bike and it's nice to add another world rider to the forum, it's a great thing to see XJs living on all over the world and that so many people still have interest in them. I can say from personal experience that if you have even a shred of grease monkey in you, you will more than enjoy working on there bikes and the satisfaction that you will receive from doing that is indescribable.

As for parts, we have the best parts source available right on this website, XJ4Ever, has everything that is available (new) and has very fast shipping as well as some good advice about these bikes. You should find them very helpful, reasonably priced and a basic lifesaver for these bikes.

Thanks for the warm welcome Massimo! Its great to be part of a forum that has genuine and sincere people collaborating from across the globe. I really haven't had much chance to work with machines as such but I am eager to dive in (although I need to build a small garage with proper tools and basic equipment) but I'm still a little scared that I might ruin what currently is a well running bike. Plus the thing that parts are not available locally makes me a little iffy as well. But I'm still hopeful and almost on the edge of starting this adventure with my bike. :) (hope that makes sense!)
