Hi guys. My 83 Maxim rebuild is almost complete. It has taken me a LOT longer than I thought, but it is almost there.

I am trying to install a new exhasut onto the bike (going 4-2 vs previous 4-1). How do I get the exhaust collars off of the old pipes so that I can install them on the new pipes? If anyone could answer I would GREATLY appreciate it.

I am off to get a a new battery since all I am getting from the starter solenoid right now is a whole buncha clicking.

When I switched from a 4-1 to a 4-2 the collars were already on the new pipes.

You were a lucky man then! I don't have any collars on mine.

Last I knew there was no way to get those collars off as they're captive, nor any way to get them onto a new pipe (as you'd have to flare the ends after installation) -- at least, not without destroying the pipes in the process.

All replacement exhausts that I've seen came with the collars pre-attached.

Assuming you need to use the originals, looks like you're going to have to cut the pipes to get them off, install on the new ones, then flare the ends to hold them captive and give them something to hold against. Otherwise I'd be contacting the manufacturer of the pipes and ask them about how they're supposed to be mounted.
