I recently discovered some XJ750's have oil coolers. Did they all come that way? Mine ('81 XJ750RH Seca) does not have one, but the frame clearly has the mounting points. Did it loose it sometime in its history? If I wanted one on there, could I just use any XJ750 cooler (and oil filter mount, etc) I get my hands on?

oil coolers only came stock on the european model as far as the 750 seca goes. The 900 and 650 turbo were the only XJs in the us to get oil coolers. Not sure on fitment/mounting/cross compatibility of the coolers other than that I seem to recall the 900 and turbo coolers were different sizes. They did make an after market cooler for the 750r as well.

The oil cooler was common here in Oz on the 900's & 750's. It was the larger one , it had a few extra rows.

I took a Stock XJ900RK Oil Cooler and mounted it on my 750 Max.

To get it to fit I needed to make the following Mods.

Extend the Post on the Upper Middle of the Cooler to utilize the Captive Braze-on Mounting Point on the Frame.
    ::: PVC "Reducer" - I.D. fits over Post ~ Smaller ended O.D. fits into Frame Braze-on. O-rings fitted to Small-ends O.D. for Shock-mount ~ Tightness And Anti-rattle. :::
    • Unless the Cooler is lowered 5 cm's, the lower edge of the Triple-tree will bump the top of the Cooler when the Handlebars are turned lock-to-lock.

    Remove Horns.
Use Captive Frame Mounts for Horns to hold Lower Cooler Mounts.
    Fabricate Mounting Hardware.
2 Long Cap Screw Bolts hold Lower Cooler to frame.

    (Bolt Head <>Flat washer<>thru Horn Mount<>Flat washer<>2-Inch Section Rubber Hose<>Flat washer<>thru Lower Cooler Mount<>Flat washer<>NyLock Hex Nut)

Tighten Nut to compress Rubber Hose for Lower Shock Mount.

If you look in the bag that lies between the hoses you'll see a grey circle; that's the adapter plate (or should be).

With the improvements to modern engine oil - - I don't think a cooler is needed anymore. This assumes you'd run a premium oil, and change it at 2,000 miles.

If I lived somewhere where I was confronted with stop-and-go traffic I'd want an oil cooler.

Bingo. I expect to use the bike for commuting, and lane splitting isn't allowed here. Summers get surprisingly hot in MN, and traffic can be at a dead stop sometimes (which I'd try to avoid). On a crazier tip, oil cooler plumbing potentially allows for some sort of non-electric handlebar and / or seat heating. You wouldn't circulate the oil through there, but you'd use the oil circuit to heat up water that you then circulated through the bars / seat.

I think Oil Coolers should have been Stock on the 650/750.
They certainly lead to Engine longevity.

Frequent Oil Changes at 2,000 mile intervals also keep the Plant from premature aging.

I installed a Seca-900 Oil cooler and Hoses to my 750.
I noticed an appreciable difference in Engine Temp during the Summer and runs across the Mass Pike to New York to visit family.
