Hello all - I tried to undo an Allen bolt which secures the butterfly bracket, that in turn supports the ignition coils on my Maxim X xj750...I removed the nut off the Allen bolt thread but when I tried to unscrew the bolt from the bracket, it got more and more difficult; the more it withdrew, the tighter it gets - am I doing something wrong guys? I need to take the coils off but am finding it ridiculously difficult - any suggestions would be most appreciated!

I'm not sure I understand what you mean, according to the pictures I took when I upgraded for Dyna coils, my X '85 750 coil bracket had one short bolt holding it somewhere over the radiator and four other short bolts on the back "wings" (butterfly analogy). None of these five bolts have nuts, so I don't see where that Allen bolt is supposed to be.

Other than these, there are two longer bolts (with nuts) securing both ends of the coils to the bracket itself. But none of these were Allen bolts on my X...

Maybe a picture would help locating the offending bolt:

the short bolts you have shown are Allen bolts on mine but thanks for taking the time to reply - I think it had had the fixings changed at some point because the securing long bolt behind the rad is missing, and like I say, Allen bolts where you have shown standard bolts should be - at least looking at your pic I can see what it looks like when I eventually get the things out...thanks again for taking the time!

You're welcome. This is one of the reasons why taking pictures when doing some work on the bike is important. Even when you don't own this bike anymore, it could help someone else.
